LRS Application for a Second Waste Transfer Station Temporarily Stopped

Recently, the Illinois Pollution Control Board chose to vacate the City’s decision to approve Lakeshore Recycling Systems’ application for a second waste transfer station in West Chicago.

This proposed waste transfer station would move and dump about 4 million pounds of garbage near our homes, and about 400 garbage trucks would travel through our community roads every day.

When LRS submitted their application for this project, they were tasked with notifying the owners of properties surrounding the proposed facility of their plans. Upon review of their application, it was found that LRS did not provide proper notice to all parties.

Even though this is the outcome we hoped for, the IPCB decision may only be a temporary win for us because LRS may decide to continue its efforts to build another dump in our community.

If LRS does decide they want to continue their efforts, they have two options: appeal the IPCB decision in court or refile their application and go through this process a second time. Although LRS has until mid-March to appeal the IPCB decision, there is no set date for when they must refile their application.

When we went through this the first time, the people of West Chicago did all they could to prevent this project from becoming a reality, including posting on social media, putting out yard signs, and providing oral and written public comment.

If we go through this process again, we urge the people of West Chicago to make their voices heard to ensure that our home does not become a dumping ground!
