Plans for a Second Waste Transfer Station Put to a Stop

Last year, the Illinois Pollution Control Board ruled that the City did not have authority to approve an application for a second waste transfer station in West Chicago because the applicant (Lakeshore Recycling) had not complied with provisions of the law relating to notice.

This proposed waste transfer station would move and dump about 4 million pounds of garbage near our homes, and about 400 garbage trucks would travel through our community roads every day.

When LRS submitted their application for this project, they were tasked with notifying the tenants who occupy the areas surrounding the proposed site facility of their plans. Upon review of their application, it was found that LRS did not provide proper notice to all parties.

Following the decision made by the Illinois Pollution Control Board, LRS submitted an appeal to the Illinois Third District Court of Appeals. Upon review, the Court affirmed the Illinois Pollution Control Board’s decision, putting a halt to this project.

It is not confirmed whether LRS plans to refile their application and go through the same process a second time. We advise you to continue monitoring this page and your email for any updates on this as we learn more about LRS’s plans.

When we went through this the first time, the people of West Chicago did all they could to prevent this project from becoming a reality, including posting on social media, putting out yard signs, and providing oral and written public comments.

If LRS decides to go through this process again, we urge the people of West Chicago to make their voices heard to ensure that our home does not become a dumping ground!

Protect West Chicago is a diverse coalition of neighbors, business owners, and community leaders from West Chicago opposed to the construction of another garbage waste transfer station in our community.
